Who is in the cast of the musical "Matilda"?

Promising Actress Alisha Weir will play the main role of Matilda Wormwood. This will be Weir's first role in a children's film, having previously starred in horror and thrillers such as 2018's Don't Leave Home. Prize winner Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility) will play the perpetually grumpy Miss Trunchbull, who is glad she was never a child. From what we've seen so far, Thompson nails the role, grinning under a tight bun as she terrorizes the children of Crunchem Hall, much like Pam Ferris did in the 1996 film adaptation. Here's hoping we get to hear Thompson say the classic Trunchbull line, "The apple never rots from the tree," before tossing brave little Matilda down the chimney. We can already feel the nostalgic fear gripping us!

Lashana Lynch ("No Time to Die") will portray an amazingly kind, warm and insightful character, Miss Honey. Andrea Riseborough (“Birdman”) will play Mrs. Wormwood, a narcissistic negligent mother previously portrayed by the “Cheers” actress. Rhea Perlman. Stephen Graham (Snatch) will play the role of Mr. Wormwood. Graham has quite a big role to play, taking over the role previously played by the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor/producer. Danny DeVito. DeVito not only starred in the 1996 film adaptation of Matilda, but also produced, directed and narrated the film. His performance as a seedy used car salesman was memorable as he talked down to his daughter, famously telling her, "I'm smart, you're stupid, I'm big, you're small, I'm right, you're wrong, and there's nothing you can do about it!«.

Additionally, Misha Garbett (“Cats”) will appear as Matilda’s new school friend, Hortense. Miss Honey's parents will appear in the film: Carl Spencer (Rocketman) will portray her escapologist father and Lauren Alexander (Death on the Nile) - her acrobat mother. Charlie Hodson-Prior will play the role of Bruce Bogtrotter eating cakes for the first time. Rei Yamauchi Fulker will play the role of Matilda's classmate - Lavender, and Winter Jarrett-Glasspool - the role of Amanda Tripp with pigtails.

How is Matilda the musical different from the original story and film?

musical Matilda story

Matilda the Musical is an adaptation of the stage musical and not a reboot of the 1996 film. While the film and musical are based on the same source material, they are very different, and the Netflix adaptation is already hinting at some differences from the musical. The original story, written by author Roald Dahl, was published in 1988 and follows a five-year-old girl who is neglected by her family and finds her only solace in books that take her to new worlds. She travels around the world from her small room in the English countryside. Entering Cruncham Hall School, Matilda meets her kind teacher Miss Honey and the scary headmistress Miss Trunchbull.

After being bullied by Trunch, Matilda suddenly discovers she has the ability to telekinesis and decides to use her powers for good, returning Miss Honey to her home and eventually convincing her negligent parents to leave her with a teacher as they flee to Spain after how the police caught them selling stolen parts. The 1996 film made some changes to the original story, such as changing the setting from England to America and Spain to Guam. In addition, the appearance of family members, the age of Matilda were changed, and the narrative role of Mrs. Phelps was almost completely removed. Also, in the film, Matilda uses telekinesis to a greater extent than in any other version.

Matilda the musical deviates from the plot in different directions. Set in canon England, the story of a rebellious and defiant telekinetic five-year-old centers on Matilda's feelings of neglect as a child lies at school, saying that her home life is wonderful and that her parents are proud of her, when in fact they consider her a mistake that they cannot understand. The musical had to change the location of some scenes due to limited space, and for this reason the scene in which Matilda visits Miss Honey's old house does not happen, although the storyline is still present, and the teacher talks about her feelings in the song "My House "

In the new film, plot points from the musical are presented in larger, extended scenes, including the story of an escapologist and acrobat set in a circus surrounded by colorful fireworks, and the luxuriously maximalist Wormwood house with two pink armchairs set right in front of their excellent TV. Although Matilda uses her abilities in the musical, the plot does not pay much attention to them, instead, Matilda's true strength lies in her strength, spirit and intelligence, and her desire to change her life for the better.
