Boruto's reveal of Kawaki as the series' final villain could be a chance to correct the mistakes Naruto made in its finale. While Boruto largely failed to live up to expectations as a sequel to Naruto, a powerful and dramatic conclusion with Kawaki as the irredeemable villain could eclipse Naruto's controversial ending.

Naruto is one of the most popular and successful manga of all time. While fans generally agree on the quality of the episode, its ending caused a huge debate. The conclusion of the Fourth Shinobi World War, fought by the allied shinobi forces to stop Madara and Tobi's "Eye of the Moon" plan, was overshadowed by the sudden appearance of Kaguya Otsutsuki, an alien goddess who became the series' final villainess. While the subsequent battle between Sasuke and Naruto helped end the series on the right note, fans were never able to stomach Kaguya's role in the finale. Conversely, Boruto's sudden reveal as the series' final villain could be the boon the manga sorely needed.

Boruto can finally surpass Naruto with Kawaki as the latest villain

Boruto Naruto Kawaki

Chapter #77 “Boruto” brings the series to its finale. Kawaki, assigned as the vessel for the reincarnation of Isshiki Otsutsuki, who was rescued and adopted by Naruto, realized that Boruto's body was inhabited by another Otsutsuki spirit, Momoshiki. Thinking that the only way to keep Naruto safe and thereby express his gratitude to his savior is to destroy all traces of Otsutsuki, Kawaki decides to kill Boruto. He then traps Naruto and Hinata in another dimension with his Daikokuten technique and prepares to face the wrath of Konoha.

Kawaki's decision may seem unexpected and forced, but it's the best thing that could have happened to the series. The fight to the death between Kawaki and Boruto was shown in a flash forward from the very first chapter of the manga, and now fans know that it will actually happen, and it will happen because of the decision of Kawaki himself. If Kawaki does become the final villain of the series, and he and Boruto fight to the death with no chance of redemption or reflection, Boruto will have a very good ending with the powerful drama that the sequel has so far lacked.

Kawaki is a much better final villain than Kaguya

Kawaki and Kaguya couldn't be more different villains. Otsutsuki never appeared before her reveal and had no connection to any of the characters, making Kaguya feel out of place as Naruto's final villain. Kawaki is instead Boruto's deutagonist, driven to this destructive decision by the bonds he created over the course of the story. While the series was mostly good throughout its run, Naruto really missed the mark with its final villains. Boruto, on the other hand, was overall mediocre, but has the chance to have a great ending with Kawaki as a sad, dramatic villain who will pursue his conviction even at the cost of hurting those he cares about.
