Rust's April 2023 update adds a ton of multiplayer features that will be very useful for those who like to play with friends (or even interact with random players) in the survival game. Updates to the map marker system, the long-awaited introduction of pings and the ability to move around the open world with a friend - fans of the co-op mode will be delighted. Plus, Easter is coming up, so get your baskets of eggs ready and read on for all the details.

Firstly, markers on the map have been updated: now they can be placed up to five at a time, and there are new tools for editing the color and type of markers. You can also add hand marks to them, although they will be truncated to three characters when displayed on the compass. Markers set by team leaders will be displayed to all team members along with their own.

Pings were introduced for even more on-the-fly communication. When using cameras, drones, or binoculars, you can now single-tap the designated ping key for a contextual ping, double-tap for a red ping to symbolize danger, or hold down the key for a radial menu with six different options from which you can manually select. All team members will see the pings and they will last for ten seconds unless manually canceled.

Rust Update April 2023

If you've ever dreamed of riding a horse with a friend snuggled up behind you, then you're in luck—Rust has added a new dual-horse saddle. By default, wild horses are born with a single saddle, but you can change it to a double saddle using the horse's radial menu once it appears in your inventory. Like a single saddle, a double saddle can be bought from a stable owner or made by hand.

Updating the Rust world model will make it easy to see what types of ammo you've dropped, as well as updating some other items. Shotgun shells now display differently for regular buckshot (red), incendiary shells (blue), and slugs (green). Likewise, rockets have a new look, making it easy to identify whether they are regular, high-velocity, or incendiary. The trap and road sign gloves also received an update to the Rust world model.

Rust Update April 2023

In honor of Easter, Rust is hosting an Easter egg hunt. Every 24-38 in-game hours, a hunt will begin, giving players three minutes to collect as many eggs as possible. The top three players will receive special prize eggs, which can be opened to obtain "various loot, ranging from scrap metal to M249."

You can also upgrade your collected eggs when you collect ten eggs of the same type: dyed ones become bronze, then silver and finally gold. If you need help during the event, there are a few items that will make collecting the elusive eggs easier. The Easter Basket allows you to instantly collect eggs, while the bunny suit and ears give you an edge over your opponents with Egg Vision. You can also purchase an egg painting costume and a handmade Rustigé egg at the Rust Easter store.

Rust Patch Notes - April 6, 2023 Update

Here are the remaining patch notes and improvements for the April 6th Rust Update, granted Facepunch studio:

Computer station user interface

  • You can now use the arrow keys or mouse wheel to switch between the selected entities. The UI now also shows the health of the entity you are currently controlling.
  • We have an existing console variable - vehicleDismountHoldTime
    - , which can be set to a value greater than zero to enable the hold-until-dismantle feature on vehicles. It is now also used if you remotely control the drone from a computer station. Setting something as low as 0,2 seconds can be an easy way to avoid accidentally dismantling and crashing your drone.

Improvements and fixes

  • Alt-clicking inventory items ignores loot containers
  • Computer Station User Interface: Health bar, key control, hold to dismantle
  • Floating single items: When destroying submarines and boats, the vault drops single items into a floating container
  • Vending Machine Genetics: The Vending Machine and Market now display plant genetics
  • Steam nickname fix: Command UI will use nicknames Steam
  • Place Doors on Deployables: A couple of months ago I decided to test if doors could be placed on deployables, which caused too much hype. This required some additional fixes, but should work now!

Gameplay Analytics

  • This month we are expanding our analytics platform by recording gameplay statistics on official servers.
  • We're still in the implementation phase so we don't have many photos to show off.
Rust 2023 update patch notes

CPU Affinity, Priority and 7950X3D Fix

  • After upgrading to 7950x3d I realized that you can't change CPU affinity when EAC is running. I've added a few commands so anyone can change core affinity and process priority in Rust. You can specify multiple kernel ranges, for example "0-7,15-23".
  • Everyone should try using a high cpu_priority and see if there is a difference.
  • If you have 7950x3d try using cpu_affinity 0-15 to make Rust only run on v-cache cores.
  • You can also add this as launch options steam: '-cpu_priority high'

Multithreaded networking

  • Multithreaded networking is now enabled by default for both client and server. This should improve both client and server performance, especially with network encryption enabled, which should be enabled on most servers.
  • As an additional optimization, we've improved the way memory pool is handled when multiple threads interact to ensure that there are no negative performance side effects from all those extra threads.
  • Early last month we also fixed an issue where a single thread was spinning at 100% load pretty much all the time with multithreaded networking enabled. Since this issue has been resolved, there are no known issues now and we really recommend that all server owners leave multi-threaded networking enabled.

Safe mode

  • Now you can run or reset Rust to safe mode - a basic config with extremely low quality settings that helps diagnose problems. You can use safe mode using the new button in the Options menu or by passing the -safemode command in the launch options Steam.
  • You should only use this feature on the advice of our support team or if you are having problems launching the game. Using this feature will overwrite your current settings, so be sure to back them up first.
