TV series The Wicker Man will it really work out? Folk horror film The Wicker Man is getting new life again with a TV series in development, Deadline reports. According to the site, "Nearly 50 years after the release of Robin Hardy's horror classic, Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish's The Imaginarium and Urban Myth Films, with support from Studiocanal, are turning The Wicker Man into a television series."

Howard Overman (War of the Worlds) has written the script for the film adaptation, and Urban Myth and The Imaginarium are in the "early stages of pitching to potential broadcasters."

The original film The Wicker Man, starring Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee, was released in 1973. Neil LaBute directed a remake in 2006, which starred Nicolas Cage.

The classic story “follows police sergeant Neil Howle, who travels by seaplane to the remote Hebridean island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. A devout Christian is horrified to discover that the island's inhabitants worship the pagan Celtic gods of their ancestors, and all hell breaks loose, ending in tragedy."

The planned television series, according to screenwriter Howard Overman, will "explore the same themes of sacrifice, superstition and ritual that were at the heart of the film."

The Wicker Man series will also reportedly take place in a "contemporary setting."
