Patty Jenkins recently completed work on the final scene of the script for Wonder Woman 3, indicating that filming will begin soon.

Patty Jenkins has announced that she has completed work on the script for Wonder Woman 3. The film "Wonder Woman" was released in the summer of 2017 and became a box office hit and a critical darling. Jenkins received much praise, prompting Warner Bros. sign a contract with her to direct the sequel of the film.

Originally slated for release in 2019 and delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 was released in December 2020 on HBO Max and in limited theaters. The film received mixed to negative reviews, and for many was a big step down from its predecessor. However, Wonder Woman 1984 was a hit as it attracted more subscribers to HBO Max and became the best-selling film of 2021 on home video. Jenkins has been talking about Wonder Woman 3 since before the release of Wonder Woman 1984, but development on the film has been fairly quiet, especially since Warner Bros. Discovery is involved in many DC projects.

Wonder Woman 3 may be closer than expected, as Jenkins recently revealed some exciting news about the script for the DC superhero film. Speaking as a guest at the Matera Film Festival in Italy, Jenkins revealed that she finished writing the final scene of Wonder Woman 3 last week. Jenkins revealed that she was planning a trilogy but is still thinking about what might happen after Wonder Woman 3, indicating that she will return for more sequels. Read Jenkins' full quote below:

“So when I said I was only going to do one, then, oh my god, I got to do two. And then I say, “Oh my God, I can’t wait to do three.” And even now I say, “This is it,” because I always plan a three-movie arc. There is a story that runs through these three different films as a whole. But even now, last week I wrote the final scene of Wonder Woman 3 and thought I'd be interested to see what happens next. So you'll never know. They asked us to think about how to do more, and it happened by accident. But you'll never know. I have many other films that I am excited to do. And I love Gal Gadot, so that's even better."

Plot details for Wonder Woman 3 have been scarce, but star Gal Gadot has confirmed that Lynda Carter is expected to return. Carter played Wonder Woman in the 1970s television series and had a cameo role as Asteria, an ancient Amazon who remained in the human world so that her Amazon sister could escape to the island of Themiscyra. While both previous Wonder Woman films were historical, Wonder Woman 3 is expected to take place in the present day after the events of Justice League.

There is currently no release date set for Wonder Woman 3. Jenkins was originally expected to direct Wonder Woman 3 after Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, but since that film was recently pulled from Disney's schedule, this could mean Wonder Woman 3 is Jenkins' next project. The earliest release date for Wonder Woman 3 is 2024, which would be four years after Wonder Woman 1984 and seven years after the first film. Currently, the only DC film scheduled to premiere this year is Joker: Folie à Deux. While the future of the DCEU remains in doubt, Warner Bros. As Discovery tries to find new direction for the franchise, it's safe to say that Wonder Woman 3 is a priority for the studio.
