Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgård has been cast as the lead in Robert Eggers' remake of the 1922 silent vampire horror film Nosferatu, directed by F.W. Murnau.

Actors Bill Skarsgård and Lily-Rose Depp have joined the cast of Robert Eggers' Nosferatu, a remake of the cult silent horror film Nosferatu, directed by F.W. Murnau. The influential 1922 German horror film is an unauthorized and unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula and one of the earliest vampire films. Eggers announced a Nosferatu remake in 2016, but the film endured a lengthy period of development hell.

Released in March 1922, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Terror is one of Murnau's most famous and influential films. Filmed in Germany, the film is loosely based on Stoker's seminal vampire novel. A young couple falls prey to the murderous Count Orlok (Max Schreck) when he moves to the German city of Wisborg. The film was controversial in its time as Stoker's estate won a lawsuit claiming the film adapted the writer's work without permission, but Nosferatu remains an influential piece of early 20th century cinema, inspiring the horror genre and receiving mentions in pop culture. And while Egger revealed in March that the Nosferatu remake was being delayed, the Northman director's next film has received a promising update.

According to Deadline, Eggers' remake of Nosferatu will now be produced by Focus Features, and two main stars - Skarsgård and Lily-Rose Depp - have already been cast. Known for playing the monstrous clown Pennywise in the adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel It, Skarsgård will play the Transylvanian vampire who stalks Depp's character across 19th-century Germany in Eggers' remake of Murnau's silent film. Harry Styles and Anya Taylor-Joy were previously tapped to star in Eggers' remake, but were unable to join the cast due to scheduling conflicts.

Why Bill Skarsgård Is Perfect for Nosferatu

Skarsgård was praised for his creepy performance as Pennywise in the two-part adaptation of King's 1986 novel, in which he embodied the twisted glee of the creature as he exploits the fears of his victims to torture him. Since the actor was already terrifying audiences with his portrayal of one of the horror icons, it's understandable why he was cast as the vampiric Count in Eggers' remake. Shrek's original performance is one of the most memorable aspects of the film. His appearance and presence as Count Orlok as he stalked his prey frightened audiences and laid the foundation for how vampires are portrayed to this day. As such, Skarsgård has already proven that he is more than capable of delivering a terrifying, impressive physical performance that lingers in audiences' memories long after the credits roll.

Although Eggers jokes that delays in the Nosferatu remake are due to Murnau's otherworldly interventions, the casting of Skarsgård and Depp is a promising development for the director's highly anticipated remake. Although many copies of the film were destroyed after the Stoker lawsuit and lost to time, Murnau's 1922 silent film has an enduring place in pop culture and has inspired many creators, including Eggers himself. With the Nosferatu remake finally cast in its lead roles, dedicated horror fanatics are sure to be eagerly awaiting their first look at Skarsgård as Count Orlok.
