The Tower of Fantasy server move has been requested over and over again by players of the anime game, and while Hotta has finally given a release date, there are a lot of things you'll have to keep in mind when rescheduling.

A server move in Hotta Studio's animated MMORPG adventure has been long overdue, but there have been a few hiccups along the way that prevented their release.

Due to several failed emergency repairs and an ongoing fight against hackers, the feature has been delayed for some time, but the developers have finally revealed when we'll be able to see it in action - and luckily, it's just around the corner.

The Tower of Fantasy server migration will begin "between December 2022 and January 2023." , writes Hotta, specifying that “as soon as we have a confirmed date, we will definitely share it with you.”

The post goes on to answer a few different questions about the service, but a few features certainly raise questions. For me, the most controversial is that if you transfer a character to a server where you already have one character, then your new character replaces the old one.

“Please make sure you do not already have an existing character registered on the destination server. If this is the case, the current character's data will be replaced,” the developers say, emphasizing that “you will have to choose a new name if your name is taken on the destination server.”

This is a little unclear to me. MMORPGs like World of Warcraft or New World often allow you to create multiple characters on the same server, meaning you can create different in-game personalities for different purposes and rotate them depending on what your guild does. Hotta's approach feels incredibly limited - especially since the game is advertised as an MMO with an emphasis on team play and dungeons.

Another thing that seems a little strange is that players can only switch to an "older server", described as "servers that were started on the same day" as the switch request. Again, this isn't ideal because if all your friends start playing the game next year on a new server, you won't be able to switch to it. You can always create a new character, but that means you'll be back to square one again.

Transferring a Tower of Fantasy server will cost 500 tanium, but Hotta is giving out a free server transfer ticket before the feature launches, so you can use it right away or keep it in your back pocket for later. It's also worth noting that some features won't be carried over, including "in-game social media lists, some leaderboard rankings, and Wormhole Points."

While I'm glad this system is finally here, I'd be lying if I said it was what I envisioned. It all feels a bit semi-finished and certainly doesn't compare to the competition. In a similar vein to good old Cyberpunk 2077, I'd rather wait a little longer and get a fully implemented, polished server migration system, rather than something that feels underdeveloped.
