Blizzard gently reminded Diablo Immortal players to actually play its RPG in multiplayer modes, rather than go off to AFK to get some free rewards. Many members of the fantasy gaming community have reported regular instances of players being AFK (away from the keyboard) and not actually playing the Diablo Immortal PvP Battlegrounds and Elder Rifts matches in the game, which were used to obtain Diablo Immortal legendary gems.

In a message on the game's official Twitter account Blizzard says, "PSA: don't go to AFK". A nice reminder, sure, but as players point out in the replies, the issue of inactive players in multiplayer events is something the game developer could take direct action against if they wanted to.

As one example, a quick look at the Diablo Immortal subreddit reveals a lot of posts since launch in which players are unhappy with other AFK users in their matches. While some players have used methods such as "spooning" (literally using a spoon to hold attack buttons and farm monsters while in an AFK state) to complete in-game tasks with minimal effort, others simply joining Battlegrounds and not playingjust to get daily rewards for participating.

In more recent topic stating that a player has faced multiple AFK players in multiple consecutive matches, all of which were high level players above the paragon server level, users are debating the inherent incentives for such things. “This is a game that discourages PvP with its whale-based system,” explains one player. "Whales" in Diablo Immortal are players who have spent large sums of real money to improve their characters.

The user continues by saying that Diablo Immortal "creates egregious incentives to join BG and go to AFK to get PvE rewards no matter what", stating that it's hard to get upset with players who do what the game is for. seems to reward them. Users responding to Blizzard's call for players not to go to AFK seem to agree, with some asking "why not?" Others note that "if no action is taken, it will continue" and add that there is not much incentive to report players for being AFK if nothing is done to them.

The players also report similar issues in Elder Rifts, saying that "a lot of people join the rifts and stand in AFK just to suck embers and expect the other members of the group to do the job." They acknowledge that Elder Rifts is not the most exciting activity, but note that it just makes life harder for other players.
