Baldur's Gate Patch 9 will introduce a new class to Larian's Early Access RPG, the Paladin. Paladin characters will be able to understand the power of their oath to stand on the side of good, and each character will be able to go to the fifth level - an important milestone in the development of every D&D character.

At first glance, the Paladin is the familiar archetype we all know and love: a ferocious melee fighter with strong support and healing abilities. They are devoted to good and start with two subclasses: Oath of Allegiance, which allows the paladin to give an ally a vengeful aura that returns 1d4 radiant damage on any melee attacks; and Oath of the Ancients, which creates a healing area around the Paladin.

Paladins can also use Divine Punishment during a melee attack, consuming a spell slot to add a dose of radiant damage to their normal melee damage.

However, not all paladins can keep their promises, and there is a hidden Oathbreaker subclass that becomes available to such characters. Being an Oathbreaker has a unique set of advantages and disadvantages, and you will be able to either try to earn redemption or turn to the dark side if you decide to go down that path.

Baldur's Gate Patch 9 also unlocks a level 3 character, giving a significant power boost to every class in Baldur's Gate 2. For example, at this level, mages learn fireball, and if you've played Divinity: Original Sin XNUMX, you'll realize how much Larian loves fireballs. balls.

During Panel From Hell on December 14, Larian also announced that Critical Role's Matthew Mercer would voice Minsk, a character from the original Baldur's Gate whose return to the series was revealed in a trailer that debuted at The Game Awards.

The update will also include a rework of the reaction system - sometimes referred to as attacks of opportunity in pen and paper RPG systems. The update allows Baldur's Gate 3 characters to choose whether or not to use these reactions instead of having them automatically trigger each time.

You'll also be able to use the Fly spell in and out of combat, and Larian says it will work as it should - you can reach treasures or clues that are out of reach, or rise above the melee. to avoid enemy melee attacks.

Baldur's Gate 3 release date is set for August 2023.
