How to play Genshin Impact Genius Invocation

The best way to describe Genius Invokation from what we've seen so far is that it's a cut down version of the combat system. Genshin Impact. It's also very similar to TCG Pokemon in that you have active party members and spare reserves, but you don't need energy cards to attack. We first saw it in action during the 3.1 Special, but we've since learned how Genius Invokation works thanks to leaks.

Two players have opposite Genius Invokation decks that they can use to fight their opponent. Your goal is for your group of three heroes to defeat the opposite side of three characters. Players can swap party members for allies to become active during your turn or attack an active enemy character.

Turns occur with priority switching after each action. At the beginning of each round, players roll eight elemental dice, from which they may choose any number to re-roll once. These cubes use the elements Genshin Impact and an additional Omni item, which players can use to pay for any item cost.

Players will use items to pay for skills during the action phase. Thus, your active character attacks your opponent's currently active character. In addition, you may spend a die showing any element to change the currently active character. Other actions that require specific Element Dice to pay:

  • Equipment cards - can strengthen certain characters.
  • Support cards - give permanent buffs to characters.
  • Event cards - give one-time effects during the game.

Players can also perform Elemental Sync during the action phase. For each discarded card, they may change the elemental type of the rolled die to the type of the currently active character.

After completing all the actions in the round, the players can announce the end of the round. The player to do so first will be the first player to act in the next round. Once both players announce the end of their turn, both players draw two cards each to signify the start of a new round.

In addition to seeing the cards attack, it appears that the number in the top left corner is the health of the health card. Each character card also has three dots on the right side that light up, although exactly when and why this happens is unclear. Our theory is that the active character gains a point whenever you use it to attack or end a turn with it as the active card. If this meter ever fills up, the active character will unleash a powerful attack that deals much more damage than their normal attacks.

In the example shown in the 3.1 update thread, Diluk's special attack dealt Xingqiu eight damage while his standard attack only dealt three damage to Mona. It is unclear if the remaining health is the reason why this special attack does eight damage.

Some Genius Invokation cards contain keywords in underlined text. Hovering over this will display the rules for that keyword. In addition, players have access to the rulebook at any time during the duel by clicking on the gear icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
