When is the Minecraft 1.20 update release date? The next major content update was announced during Minecraft Live on October 15, 2022 and has now been given its official name: Trails and Tales. The update focuses on the Minecraft community and their stories. Ahead of the release date for the Trails and Tales update, Mojang Studios has revealed all the new and cool features we can expect to see, and we've even been given hands-on access to all the new stuff in recent snapshots.

Minecraft remains one of the best PC games of the last decade and keeps fans coming back with yearly updates. We know that the next update will include new Minecraft skins, as well as a new way to customize your look with Minecraft armor finishes. There will be a new Minecraft camel mob - as well as mob-voting winner Sniffler - and, yes, Minecraft's long-forgotten archeology will be at play. Here's everything we know about when the Minecraft 1.20 Trails and Tales release date will be.

Minecraft 1.20 update release date

The Minecraft 1.20 update will be released on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. Developer Mojang has confirmed the release date for the Trails and Tales update after the 1.20 preview is released.

This aligns with our previous guesses for a summer release date based on previous content updates. The last four major updates, with the exception of 1.19, were released in June of the following year after their announcement. Update 1.19 was an exception, as it was not a full planned update, but the second part of the Caves and Cliffs update. Considering that all the new materials have already been revealed and are almost ready for release, a June release date is quite logical.

Minecraft 1.20 Trails and Tales Features

New cherry blossom biome

Here it is - the main thing, the latest discovery of the large-scale Trails and Tales update - the new Cherry Blossom biome. This new biome has long been sought after by fans of the game, as evidenced by Sakura trees appearing in many of Minecraft's most popular mods, as well as a new type of wood that always hits the spot. Additionally, version 1.20 will introduce not one, but two new wood sets, including bamboo wood (read more below). This beautiful biome doesn't contain any new mobs (yet) but is home to sheep, pigs and bees, and while we're not sure if this is a new grass block - but we sure hope it is - you can see in the image above that the ground is even covered in beautiful pink Sakura petals.

Archeology Minecraft 1.20

Археология

That's right, archeology will appear. The feature was first announced during Minecraft Live 2020 as part of the Caves and Cliffs update, but was then canceled - or so we thought. In a surprise announcement on February 10, 2023, Mojang announced that they are still working on Minecraft Archeology and that it will be part of the 1.20 update. To begin with, archaeological sites will be limited to the area around the desert temples, but they are planned to expand in the future. So if you find yourself at one of the rare desert structures, start digging, keeping an eye out for a new suspicious sand block that holds mysterious ancient secrets.

Bamboo blocks and rafts

Of course, a new Minecraft update should come with new blocks—after all, blocks are literally what makes the sandbox game what it is. In the Minecraft Trails and Tales update, these new blocks are bamboo blocks, which fall somewhere between the wood block family and bamboo itself.

This new block is remarkable for several reasons. First, it adds another use for the fast-growing bamboo plant, which until now has only been used for feeding pandas and building forests. Bamboo block can be used to make most of the same items that can be made from wood, such as stairs, doors, slabs and fences, and even your own unique version of bamboo mosaic. However, the only item that cannot be made from bamboo is a boat. Technically. The new raft replaces a boat when made from bamboo and functions exactly the same, it just looks a little cooler floating away from your desert island or jungle-themed base.

minecraft camels in the desert

Camels

We already knew that a new mob would be coming to Minecraft soon as the annual mob voting resumed for another year. However, the winner, the sniffer, has been confirmed to join another new creature, the camel, in a future update.

Adding to the ever-growing list of Minecraft mobs, the camel will not only bring something new to the often overlooked desert biome, but also provide a new and agile way to move around the world. This cute mob can be ridden by two players at the same time, has useful new movement mechanics, as well as its own charming and realistic animation.

Minecraft 1.20 Bookshelf

Serrated bookshelves

Speaking of new items and new types of wood, there will be another wood item coming soon that will be useful for both builders and redstoners. The Embossed Bookshelf is perhaps one of the most interesting and exciting blocks added to Minecraft in a while thanks to its game-changing implications.

The Chassis Bookshelf is an interactable bookshelf, a step up from the existing bookshelf, which can be decorative and useful for creating recipes, but doesn't actually function as a bookshelf. Now you can write notes and stories in a book and store them safely in your bookshelf. Keep your precious enchanted books safe on the embossed bookshelf. Even make secret doors using a bookshelf. Yes, the new block mechanic triggers a redstone signal when a book is placed or removed, so your secret castle-room-dungeons can become a reality. And if you have some free space, new smooth wood can make a great floor.

Minecraft 1.20

hanging signs

With the addition of a new type of wood - bamboo - and a bookshelf with a chisel comes another new wood crafting recipe that allows you to make the most of each type of wood. For some time now we have been able to make signs that can be placed on the ground or leaned against a wall. Creative players use them not only to create stories or messages to other players, but also in structures such as chairs or beds. Version 1.20 will add Hanging Signs, a cute option for making shops, streets, or other Minecraft buildings even more realistic. And artistic players have already started finding other uses for hanging signs, such as the bunting-like display shown above during Minecraft Live.

New characters and skins

Those who spotted the new faces in the recent Minecraft trailers got good news when it was announced that they were being added to the Minecraft canon. These new characters are now official Minecraft skins: Ario, Efe, Kai, Makena, Nur, Sunny and Zuri have joined the well-known Steve and Alex. You can already change into one of the seven new characters from the Bedrock edition dressing room and Java edition launcher, so make sure you know how to change your Minecraft skin.

Minecraft 1.20 armor

Armor finishing

If you're happy with your Minecraft skin, then you can further customize your Minecraft style by making your shape even more teardrop-shaped with the new Minecraft armor trims. Armor finishing is no easy task, so it adds a new and exciting experience to the survival game as you will have to find new blacksmithing templates needed to add stylish details to your armor. And that's before you've even collected enough of the valuable gems or ingots needed to craft the armor itself.

That was all we know about when the Minecraft 1.20 release date is and what features await us.
