Are you looking for when the My Hero Academia feature film will be released on Netflix? Netflix is diving back into the live-action anime market. After giving home to the stellar adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin and the not-so-stellar Death Note, the streamer is now boarding Legendary Entertainment's upcoming feature-length adaptation of My Hero Academia. Announced back in 2018, the adaptation brought in veteran anime adaptation director and Alice in Borderland creator Shinsuke Sato last year to direct the project, with a script written by Obi-Wan Kenobi's Joby Harold.
Created by Kohei Horikoshi in 2014, My Hero Academia quickly became one of the most popular manga series of all time and an equally beloved series with many colorful characters. Since it began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine, the manga has sold 65 million copies, including digital editions. The story centers on Izuku Midoriya, a young man who dreams of becoming a superhero, born in a world where 80% of people are endowed with “quirks” or superpowers. His hopes of getting into the prestigious superhero academy UA High School were almost dashed when he was unfortunately born without his own quirk. After a chance meeting with the legendary hero All Might, essentially the universe's equivalent of Superman, he is back on the path to becoming the greatest hero alive.
The anime My Hero Academia continues to develop, now in its sixth season. Three spin-off films were also released: My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising and My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission. Details about the film adaptation of Legendary's franchise are still scarce, so it's unknown how much of Midoriya's story will be told in the film. However, this will be Sato's English-language debut, and the film will be produced by Legendary's Mary Parent and Alex Garcia.
Netflix is cashing in on the world of anime
Legendary's My Hero Academia adaptation is now coming to the streaming platform, as Netflix continues to invest in anime and shows based on Japan's most popular series. It is noteworthy that the platform is currently working on its own anime adaptation with a huge budget - One Piece. Following on from the disastrous Cowboy Bebop series, Netflix is working directly with manga creator Eiichiro Oda to bring the long-running series to life as faithfully as possible. Compared to other streaming companies, they have practically cornered the anime adaptation market, and the addition of a new Legendary film will only strengthen their position.
At the moment, there is no information about who else is involved in the project and when the My Hero Academia Feature Film can be released.
