The strategy game Victoria 3 has been out for a few weeks now, and while it's a lot of fun to run a country in the turbulent 19th century, players have encountered some bumps and bugs. Game Director Martin Anward has posted a new dev diary outlining some of the changes coming with the 1.1 update, which he says the team plans to release before the end of the year, addressing one of my biggest annoyances in the game.

As I noted in our Victoria 3 review, the people who control everything that happens in Victoria 3 are interesting creatures, each with their own set of traits and needs. They have a job they go to, an income, a religious and ethnic background, and expectations from their government. If you don't meet their needs or provide them with well-paying jobs, they will become radicalized, making it difficult for you to act and perhaps even leading to a revolution against you.

The problem is that it can be difficult or impossible to determine what these needs are in individuals. Fortunately, anward says That, Paradox is adding new tabs to the population information screen that provide a breakdown of the economic situation and consumption of goods by each population. You'll be able to click on a locality and then see the exact prices they're paying for the items they need - great.

Anward also explains that work is underway to make government legitimacy more meaningful than it is now. Victoria 3 patch 1.1 introduced a five-level legitimacy system, each level adds bonuses or minuses to the rate of generation of loyalists and radicals in your country.

The paradox also lies in adjusting how the laws of church and state and citizenship laws affect your population. At present in Victoria it is a relatively simple and abstract compromise between tolerance and power. In update 1.1, you will see that more restrictive laws result in more loyalists and fewer radicals in the portion of the population that is "accepted" in your society.

Anvard says that next week he will reveal more about the Victoria 3 patch 1.1 update, and that another patch, version 1.0.6, is also due out next week.
