I never thought that I would be actively thinking about the hair settings in Resident Evil 4 Remake. However, while playing through the recently released demo of Resident Evil 4 Remake Chainsaw, I couldn't help but notice that Leon Kennedy's bouffant locks look a little fat in the remastered version. To freshen up the federal agent's hair, I went to look for a solution in the game's settings menu, where I found both a virtual shampoo and something about myself.

I understand perfectly well that paying so much attention to the hair in the Resident Evil 4 remake is ridiculous. However, I've worn this boy band hairstyle more than once throughout my life, and I personally wouldn't be able to fend off the cult of Los Illuminados with thick bangs. In the end, it would have affected my self-confidence, and I think Leon would feel the same way if I didn't do something about it.

So, while dialing in the best Resident Evil 4 settings via the demo, I decided to spend some time playing around with Leon's hair lock option. Games like The Witcher 3 and Tomb Raider also have improved hair settings on PC, but both the first Hairworks mod and the second TressFX feature have performance limitations and the results are somewhat distracting. I fully expected to experience something similar while trying to deal with Leon's emo hair, but somehow I managed to both wash it and prevent the framerate from dropping too much.

Resident Evil 4 Leona hair

By raising the hair strand settings to either "normal" or "high" levels, I was able to effectively cure Leon of his bad hairstyle. It feels like Capcom owes a debt to the legendary resident of Raccoon City, because in Resident Evil 6 the developers really messed up his hairstyle. While Resident Evil 2 Remake brought newcomer RPD onto the scene with a less plastic head, I feel like the latest overhaul has finally fixed the character's hair issues.

To be honest, it's a bit silly to spend more than a minute or two thinking about Leon Kennedy's hair. After all, in Resident Evil 4 Remake, you'll be busy making your way through one of the creepiest villages in video game history to take care of the greasy mane's horrors. However, that didn't stop me from spending half a day wondering if Leon had time to shower before heading out to find Ashley, and I'm glad my somewhat banal search led to a solution.

If you had asked me if I cared about things like the quality of hair in video games before I played the Resident Evil 4 remake, I would have answered a resounding no. I still maintain that this is true, but when it comes to Leon Kennedy, I'm happy to be a pedant to make sure the baby-faced Biohazard veteran looks and feels his best.
