Terraria's new echo coating is one of the most exciting new features introduced in the Terraria 1.4.4 Labor of Love update. While Echo Blocks - a unique type of block that is completely invisible to the eye unless equipped with special glasses - were introduced in the sandbox game's 1.4 update, the introduction of the Echo Cover has dramatically increased the opportunities for mischief and clever traps, and the community is wasting no time , starting to work.

One of two Terraria coatings introduced in Labor of Love, Echo Coating can be applied to any block or object to make it invisible. This means that you can now make entire buildings, houses, and even objects like chests, traps, and pylons invisible. Covered items can also be made to appear by activating a new item in version 1.4.4 called the Echo Chamber, which will cause all blocks within its area of effect to appear.

Players quickly found an easy way to use this new functionality for nefarious purposes, realizing that the combination of echo coating and actuators allowed blocks to be completely switched on and off, both visually and functionally. Of course, you can do a lot of fun and friendly tricks with this - but this is Terraria, where would we be without a little trolling?

As demonstrated on Reddit by the innocent user CuteFoxNoises, who is apparently far less innocent than his name suggests, the combination allows for a simple trap in which a player-on-top logic sensor placed underground detects when someone passes over him, and activates actuators located in a number of blocks, as well as a nearby echo chamber, to form a large chamber around the person.

To achieve maximum effect, you can, of course, use blocks that are too high level so that the user cannot make a path through them. You can also bury the echo chamber underground, as detailed by Terraria YouTuber Khaios, so they can't just turn it off again. We do not recommend that you try this on your friends, no matter how ridiculous it may be.

However, another player took it one step further by creating a trap concept that Terraria creator Redigit would be proud of. By connecting a trap chest (a unique type that sends an activation signal when opened) to a series of actuators, gwabbawaba causes the trap chest to break when opened, while setting up a floating, echoing mimic statue to spawn the mimic chest in its place. This is a very tricky method that poses a much greater threat than traditional mimics, which can be quite easy for an experienced player to spot due to their tendency to stand in places that are fairly obvious evidence.

Users of the subreddit are equal parts delighted and horrified by gwabbawaba's creation. One player comments, "This is really how mimics are supposed to work," while another simply remarks, "Don't let Red see that." One comment noted that the Mimics themselves may need an update, especially given that there are several new seeds that use them, including a new ultimate seed that introduces Terraria's Legendary difficulty mode.
