When will Overwatch 2 PvE release date be set? Overwatch 2 was originally revealed at BlizzCon 2019, but its development has gone through a rough patch. While the developers wanted to keep fans updated on Overwatch 2 updates, the departure of game director Jeff Kaplan, as well as other events at Blizzard, temporarily halted that process.

In March 2022, Blizzard announced their plans to separate the game's FPS PvP features from its PvE launch. With this change, you can start playing PvP in Overwatch 2 right away, but in addition to the new seasonal release structure and the Battle Pass, there's a lot more to come.

Overwatch 2 PvE Release Date Window

Overwatch 2 PvE release date: 2023. The roadmap Blizzard shared on June 16 shows that future seasons in 2023 will see PvE begin, but the first two seasons will only include multiplayer and cosmetic additions. It may not necessarily be the first new season of 2023, and since the current periodicity of seasons is nine weeks, it could be several seasons before the story mode arrives.

When will Overwatch 2 be released?

The plot of Overwatch 2 takes place after Winston remembered Overwatch, and focuses on the second Omnis rebellion and learning who the main players are. As such, you can expect to encounter villains from Sector Zero and Talon along the way.

Overwatch 2 story mission gameplay

Overwatch 2 gameplay

If you're familiar with the co-op "Archives" missions that were introduced for some Overwatch 1 events, then the PvE missions in Overwatch 2 should be very similar. Each story mission pits a squad of four players against AI threats, with the choice of heroes determined by the mission itself. Since the team composition is set, you can expect dedicated voice lines and a story that will unfold during gameplay.

To make the game feel more like a special story mode, Blizzard stated that each mission would also feature a pre- and post-game cinematic, allowing players to more fully immerse themselves in the mode. Check out the story mission gameplay below to see how the standard level unfolds.

What immediately catches the eye is that, although the level is familiar, the Story Mission version is filled with contextual cues, cinematic events, and scenario destruction, which makes it seem like it's a purpose-built environment.

What are Overwatch 2 Hero Missions?

Overwatch 2 Hero Missions

These are more simplified versions of story missions that don't have as much narrative. Instead, players must complete them to level up their heroes and unlock new Overwatch 2 talents. You can choose from multiple difficulty options for each hero mission, and the objectives appear to be a hodgepodge of AI enemies from story missions and PvE. oriented turns in PvP game modes. Blizzard aims to have hundreds of such missions so that PvE does not feel like repetitive cramming.

To keep things fresh, Hero Missions will take place across all of the game's multiplayer maps, and some maps will even include new playable environments, such as the courtyard of the Eberle and Sons brewery in King's Row. Weather effects were also added to some missions to give them a more lively character and introduce new factors such as weather blurring the player's vision.

How is PvE combat different in Overwatch 2?

As you progress through PvE content, you will be able to unlock talents and skills for your chosen heroes. Again, these are reworked versions of each hero's traditional skills that should breathe new life into some well-known PvP skills, as well as being much more effective against the large hordes of enemies you face in PvE.

We've already seen some variations: May turns into a ball of ice and flattens enemies, and Soldier: 76's biotic field turns into a healing force field that knocks back any enemies it comes into contact with. An example skill tree for Reinhardt, which was revealed in February 2021, shows three separate branches for Crusader, Juggernaut, and Guardian, and in each section you can see around 20 different skills, many of which contain multiple stages.

There will also be items like Corrosive Grenades and Healing Stations in the game, but we haven't seen those yet.

That's all we know about the PvE part of Blizzard's next team shooter. If you need help choosing a hero, be it best DPS, best support hero or best tank hero, check out our Overwatch 2 tier listto find out which heroes to choose.
