The Simpsons is full of weird jokes, sometimes some of them related to video games, like when Millhouse played the game Waterworld. And now you can play it!

If you haven't seen the movie "Waterworld" starring Kevin Costner, it takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in the distant year 2500, where the water level has risen so high that all continents are under water. In The Simpsons episode The Springfield Files, Millhouse plays an arcade game based on the film, paying 40 quarters, the usual amount for an arcade game. And now indie developer Macaw45 has made it actually playable, since it was just a small joke in the original episode.

“I've always been fascinated by the fake video games that sometimes appeared on The Simpsons, and Waterworld always fascinated me as a kid,” explains Macaw45 in game page description. "Of course, it's just a quick joke poking fun at how expensive a movie was to make at the time, but the faux-act itself, with its giant Kevin Costner character on screen taking one step before the machine begs for more quarters, was always going to cause I have such a desire to know “what will be behind that one screen that you see in the show.”

Macaw45 have really added a bit of their own interpretation, going beyond what was originally shown as mentioned in the description, creating a richer Waterworld game for everyone to enjoy.

Ironically, this is not the first Waterworld video game in existence. In fact, if you can believe it, four Waterworld games have been released: one for the SNES, one for the Game Boy, one for the PC, and one for the future tech, Virtual Boy, each one different from the other, so there's plenty to choose if you are planning a Waterworld theme night.
