The new gameplay of Dead Island 2 has revealed many new details about the upcoming zombie game. The Dead Island 2 demo naturally features plenty of the undead roaming the streets of Hollywood, and is intercut with an artistic cinematic directed by developer Deep Silver - an homage to the many films that inspired the zombie game.

Dead Island 2's gameplay showcases an "advanced blood system" that truly allows you to melt zombies, layer by layer, down to the bone. Jawbones dangle from dismembered faces, limbs fly in all directions, and there are numerous shots of fists going straight through zombie faces.

Gameplay Dead Island 2

The video confirms that we will encounter several different types of zombies. While there is no detailed description of what differentiates them, the announcer explains that there are big ones, small ones, loud ones, beautiful ones (which is disgusting in a new way), and even “smart ones.”

Luckily, to deal with them, we'll have a wide variety of increasingly bizarre weapons collected from the abandoned homes of Los Angeles residents. Melee weapons include a variety of swords, hammers, other martial arts tools and equipment, but there are also many handguns.

Dead Island 2 also features a weapon crafting system that allows you to customize your arsenal, somewhat similar to what you'll find in the Dying Light games - you can attach components to hammers and machetes for bonus fire or shock damage, which will allow you to experiment with the gore system we mentioned earlier.

The video also shows voice integration in Dead Island 2 - players will be able to shout specific commands into the microphone to change weapons or taunt zombies to attract their attention.

Dead Island 2's release date is set for April 2023, and the road to get there has been long and winding. First announced in 2010, the game has been delayed several times, but Deep Silver has promised it's still in development, even after splitting with Dead Island 2 studio Yager up until that point. The game moved to Sumo Digital and then ended up at Deep Silver Dambuster Studios in Nottingham. We can't wait to find out if it was worth the wait.
