When will BlizzCon 2024 take place? If you had a time machine and went back ten years to tell people at the height of the World of Warcraft craze that BlizzCon was being canceled without any specific timeline hinting at its return, people would probably look at you like this: like you've had too much Badlands Bourbon. These days, however, Blizzard is canceling BlizzCon 2024, leaving only a hint that it will return at some point in the coming years.

In recent years, the scale of the once grandiose convention has noticeably decreased. After being canceled in 2020, it returned in 2021 as an online-only event with the introduction of Diablo II: Resurrected and the World of Warcraft Classic expansion Burning Crusade. It then disappeared again in 2022, only to return in 2023 as a full-fledged real-life convention where the Worldsoul Saga for the MMORPG was announced. Now it has been canceled again, and there is no clear indication of when exactly it will return.

“After careful consideration over the last year, we at Blizzard have decided not to host BlizzCon in 2024. This decision was not taken lightly, as BlizzCon remains a special event for all of us, and we know many of you look forward to it,” Blizzard said in a statement posted on the BlizzCon website. "While we're approaching things differently this year, and we've looked at different event formats in the past, rest assured that we're just as excited as ever to bring BlizzCon back in the future."

While BlizzCon 2024 won't happen, Blizzard points to several other live conventions that the developer will be attending. Among them are Overwatch sports competitions at Dreamhack Dallas and Dreamhack Stockholm, a special series of celebrations in honor of the 30th anniversary of Warcraft, as well as information that Blizzard may be present at Gamescom.

The timing of this year's BlizzCon falls at an inconvenient time around World of Warcraft: The War Within's most likely launch window, and with nothing else to focus on other than the upcoming Diablo 4 expansion, it's understandable that Blizzard might want to focus its efforts this year somewhere else. At the same time, if BlizzCon returns in the future, we can only wonder if 2023 will be the last time we see this conference.
