In many parts of the world, rents are rising faster than renters can keep up with - and it looks like the same thing is happening in The Sims 4. Players who joined EA's popular lifestyle game after it went free this month were sometimes blindsided by their monthly bills - often because they didn't know how they were calculated.

“Does anyone know how to lower rent prices?” asks redditor peachymoonlightea in a post on The Sims Franchise subreddit. Attached to the post is an image of the Sims family's monthly bills, which total 3 simoleons. It's not an easy payoff, even for Sims in some of the highest paying career fields in The Sims 852, such as officers and stylists.

As commenters in this thread point out, one of the places where many new The Sims 4 players get into trouble is the total value of their Sims' homes. Monthly bills are calculated based on everything Sims own, not just the home itself. You may have a modest home, but if you fill it with priceless violins, your monthly bill will be high.

However, putting these things in a warehouse won't help, because the things you keep in a warehouse also count towards your monthly bills.

You may also see massive score increases thanks to the effects of some The Sims 4 mods such as MC Command Centre.

Of course, one way to reduce these bills is to get rid of some of the expensive items your Sims keep around the house and in their inventory. However, you can also reduce this number to zero by unlocking the Thrift trait for your Sims.

If a Sim in the family has this trait (which can be unlocked in the Satisfaction Rewards Store once the Sim earns 2000 Whimsy Satisfaction Points), you will see a 25% reduction in monthly bills. But what's even better is that this trait is cumulative - the more Sims in a household that have this trait, the lower your scores will be. This results in a 90% discount if eight frugal Sims live in the same house.
