AMD RDNA 3 is going to take on the Nvidia Lovelace leviathans starting with the Radeon RX 7900 XT and XTX. The good news is that they both have an impressive sub-$1000 price tag, which is below Nvidia's $600.
AMD has historically struggled to take the crown of the best graphics cards from Nvidia, but instead of trying to keep up with performance, the Red team decided to hit their rival where it hurts: price. We'll have to wait for individual reviews to come out before judging how well the new Radeon cards stack up against GeForce alternatives, but this time around, it really feels like a war.
To help you prepare for the next generation GPU lineup, we've compiled everything we know about AMD RDNA 3, including release date, price, specs, and benchmarks.
AMD RDNA 3 release date
The release date for AMD RDNA 3 is close as the Radeon RX 7900 XT and XTX hit stores on December 13th. You can see the full details below:
Like Nvidia, AMD has decided to work with its top two graphics cards and has kept any other potential members of the Radeon RX 7000 family under wraps for now. We may see more information on entry-level and mid-range GPUs at some point in 2023.
AMD RDNA 3 price
The best part about AMD RDNA 3 is the price. AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT worth it 899 dollars United States, while the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is 999 dollars. Both are cheaper than the RX 6900 XT, with the latter priced at 600 dollars smaller than RTX 4090.
Keeping the price low comes with some spec sacrifices, but AMD's internal benchmarks seem promising, aside from any first-hand testing we'll do ourselves.
AMD RDNA 3 Specifications
The AMD RDNA 3 specs are pretty crowded, with the Radeon RX 7900 XTX using 24GB of memory and the Radeon RX 7900 XT using 20GB. The slight catch here is that this is a slower version of GDDR6 rather than the GDDR6X we see on the Nvidia RTX 4090, but that probably helps keep the price down a lot.
RH 7900 HTX | RX 7900 XT | RX 6900 XT | |
Video memory (GDDR6) | 24 GB | 24 GB | 16 GB |
---|---|---|---|
Game frequency | 2,3 GHz | 2,0 GHz | 2,0 GHz |
Frequency increase | 2,5 GHz | 2,4 GHz | 2,25 GHz |
Computing units | 96 (RDNA 3) | 84 (RDNA 3) | 80 (RDNA 2) |
TVP | 355 W | 300 W | 300 W |
Tire width | 384 bit | 384 bit | 256 bit |
Both GPUs are powered by Navi 31, but rumor has it that there will be Navi 32 and 33 for mid-range and entry-level models respectively.
These are the first graphics cards to feature DisplayPort 2.1, even though the best gaming monitor doesn't even have a connector. Its upper limits include 8K at 165Hz or 4K at 480Hz, but we haven't seen any display come close to them yet. The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 will be one of the first 8K DisplayPort 2.1 screens to be unveiled at CES 2023.
AMD also keeps the same two 8-pin power connectors to avoid the RTX 4090 cable melting issue.
In terms of power, the 7900 XTX is 355W while the 7900 XT requires 300W. However, AIB cards will likely put more strain on the GPUs, and some of them may use a similar cooler for the RTX 4090.
AMD RDNA 3 Test Assumptions
Until we see reviews online, we're stuck with AMD's internal benchmarks, so take this with a pinch of salt. As expected, RDNA 3 graphics cards are primarily designed for 4K gaming, but can hit 8K with AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution for faster frame rates.
The RX 7900 XTX is supposedly 1,5x-1,7x faster than the RX 6950 XT at 4K resolution, even in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. There are even 8K benchmarks with AMD FSR as Assassin's Creed Valhalla hits up to 96fps per second.
Naturally, even the best gaming PC will struggle with resolutions above 4K without the help of upscaling software, so 8K will only be possible in games that have added FSR support.
