The Last of Us turns into a sweet and good-natured '80s sitcom in a new AI-generated video. HBO, already the home of prestige television, looks to have another big hit with The Last of Us. Adapted from the Naughty Dog video game of the same name, the series was widely praised for its fidelity to the source material, as well as the performances of its actors, particularly leads Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

The Last of Us, inspired by the game, has not only been critically acclaimed, but also a hit with fan-content creators, as exemplified by a new video that reimagines a super-intense post-apocalyptic drama as a downright charming 1980s sitcom.

The clip, published by Dan Taveras Music, uses images generated by the AI software Midjourney to create the opening title sequence, complete with music by Taveras himself. While the clip has some post-apocalyptic trappings, it basically looks like a kind family show, which is completely different from The Last of Us.

Как The Last Of Us destroys the "curse of video games"

The Last Of Us 80

There have been so few good movie and TV adaptations of video games over the years that some have come to call them the "curse of video games" that plagues any content inspired by the world of games. But most game adaptations translate games that aren't particularly designed to be adapted into other media, and aren't particularly story-rich. The situation is completely different with The Last of Us, a game that many already think of as a movie in video game form, though it's still filled with just enough action to keep gamers satisfied.

In case of The Last of Us the clean, straightforward narrative arc was already ripe for eventual adaptation, and characters were already sketched out that could be brought to life through deeper writing and fully realized performances. The resulting show almost completely eradicated the concept of the "video game curse", demonstrating the possibility of good video game adaptations and setting a high bar for other similar projects such as Prime Video's God of War and Peacock's Twisted Metal in the near future.
