Dark series creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Fris will begin work on an adaptation of the novel The Thing Is Killing the Children for Netflix after the streamer canceled the film 1899. Dark first premiered on Netflix in 2017, establishing Bo Odar and Frieza as a uniquely talented creative duo. After satisfyingly wrapping up that series after 3 seasons, the team released 1899, a mystery/sci-fi series that attracted an ardent fan base but didn't have enough viewership to justify a second season, according to Netflix.

Now, according to THR, Bo Odar and Friese have announced their next project at Netflix after the streamer picked up 1899 in January. The duo's next project will be an adaptation of "The Thing Is Killing the Children," the hit comic book by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell'eder, published by Boom! Studios. Bo Odar and Friese will serve as writers, showrunners and executive producers on the new series, which centers on a small town haunted by child-eating monsters and a young woman who goes on the hunt for the creatures.

What to expect from the series “Something Kills Children”?

Something is killing children

The series “Something Kills Children” was first released in limited circulation in 2019, quickly gained popularity and was transferred to the ongoing category. The upcoming adaptation looks to be an interesting addition to Bo Odar and Freeze's resumes, with the series allowing them to delve even deeper into the horror genre. Both Darkness and 1899 have ventured into horror territory at times, but Something Is Killing the Children looks like it'll take it to a whole new level.

The Thing Is Killing Children also features a completely different type of protagonist compared to the duo's previous works, centering on a female monster hunter named Erica Slaughter. Unlike 1899, which had multiple main characters who slowly unraveled the big mystery, Something Is Killing the Children will feature a more active and confident hero in rallying the other teens. Both Dark and 1899 were rated TV-MA and featured occasional shocking violence, and it seems likely that the upcoming adaptation will continue that ratings trend.

While Dark ran for three seasons on Netflix, telling the full story, 1899 was cut short before many of the series' secrets were revealed. It is unknown whether the cancellation of 1899 will affect Something Kills the Children in terms of the story told in the first season and the mysteries that may remain unsolved. Unfortunately, there's no word yet on when viewers can expect Something Kills the Children to release on Netflix, but it likely won't be anytime soon.
