I wonder if there is a post-credits scene in Godzilla Kong: New Empire? You can find the answer in our article. While Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire certainly showcases the potential that the franchise had, there are no intercut or post-credit scenes in Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire. While audiences may have become jaded with crossover franchises since the advent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Legendary's Monsterverse has been one of the few movie franchises to get it right. 2014's Godzilla, 2017's Kong: Skull Island, and 2's Godzilla 2019: King of the Monsters were largely entertaining monster movies in their own right, but they had connective tissue that foreshadowed the Godzilla vs. Kong crossover event. Despite being released in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic during Warner Brothers' "Project Popcorn" era, Godzilla vs. Kong was successful enough to launch a new sequel, Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire.

There's a post-credits scene in Monsterverse

Godzilla and Kong: A New Empire

While the Marvel Studios films popularized the concept of a post-credits scene, it's certainly not the only franchise that keeps viewers staying past the credits to find out what happens next. Several Monsterverse films featured post-credits scenes that set the stage for future installments. Kong: Skull Island had a moment that introduced Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah to monsters attacking, and Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters ended with Alan Jonah (Charles Dance) buying Ghidorah's severed head.

Considering Godzilla vs. Kong didn't have a post-credit scene, it's no surprise that Adam Wingard's Monsterverse 2 doesn't have one either. While post-credit scenes are often used to promote upcoming projects that are approaching their release date, there are currently no new Monster Universe films in production. While the ending of the Apple TV+ TV show Monarch revealed that Apex had taken control of Skull Island in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, how that might tie into future films is unclear.

While they were once an enjoyable reason to stay until the end of a film, post-credit scenes have become less effective and more cynical over the past few years. Audiences are tired of post-credits scenes that mean nothing, so the fact that Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire doesn't have any gimmicks at the end is quite refreshing. It's likely that a third film will be announced if Godzilla & Kong: New Empire is a commercial success, but Legendary is thankfully in no rush to announce something it doesn't intend to complete.

Where will the Monster Universe go next?

Godzilla and Kong: A New Empire

Even though the film ends with one of the franchise's biggest fights, Godzilla & Kong: New Empire suggests there will be even more monster teams in the future. Although Godzilla, Kong and Mothra are now united in their efforts to protect humanity, it seems likely that their reign will remain unchallenged. Considering that kaiju like Gorosaurus, Megaguirus, Destroyah, and Gigan have yet to debut in the Monster Universe, it's possible that Legendary will try to include these characters in future installments of the series.

The runaway success of Toho's Godzilla Minus One suggests that enthusiasm for the franchise is at its peak, but also indicates that audiences may be more interested in more serious interpretations of the characters. With its eccentric characters, frequent use of 1980s music and over-the-top visual spectacle, Godzilla Kong: The New Empire is easily the silliest entry in the Monsterverse to date. Whether this is a good thing remains to be seen.
