Director Chad Stahelski is confident his adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima can match the critical success of the HBO series The Last Of Us. Stahelski will helm the adaptation of Sucker Punch Studios' acclaimed 2020 adventure video game after joining a Sony Pictures/PlayStation Productions co-production in 2021. Ghost of Tsushima tells the story of Jin Sakai, a samurai warrior and remaining member of the Sakai clan, who confronts invading Mongol forces during their advance on Tsushima Island in the 12th century.

During a conversation with brobible Stahelski says he's confident his feature-length adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima can live up to the quality The Last Of Us. The director stated that Ghost of Tsushima could potentially have a successful reception that could rival the HBO hit The Last Of Us thanks to its focus on capturing gaming themes above all else. Check out what Ghost of Tsushima director Stahelski had to say below:

I hope that The Last of Us will shed light on upcoming video game adaptations. I'm working on Rainbow Six, Ghost of Tsushima. Both are fantastic projects that I really hope will come true. But Ghost… it has an amazing story. This is a movie about samurai vs. samurai. It has a great theme. We've got a big push for this and a lot of interest because Last of Us insists that yes, the curse of the video game on the movies is sort of lifted. It can be done. You just have to give him love and attention.

Как The Last Of Us set a new standard for video game adaptations

director of Ghost of Tsushima

Over the years, video game adaptations have often received increased attention due to the way they have brought popular stories to the screen. In the case of many adaptations, including the Paul W. S. Anderson series Resident Evil, and the infamous 1993 Super Mario Bros.. In the film, major departures from the source material drew criticism from gamers, while audiences failed to invest in a story in which part of the source material's appeal was due to player involvement. Because of this, Ghost of Tsushima and other recent adaptations often face an uphill battle to avoid repeating previous failures.

Compared to previous attempts The Last Of Us attempted to please both existing video game fans and audiences alike by striking a balance between accuracy and bringing video game narrative to screens in an accessible format. Along with adaptation The Last Of Us and with dialogue taken directly from the game and the casting of several actors involved in the original title, the HBO series also heavily emphasized themes of reclaiming humanity and moving after tragedy through new storylines. As such, The Last Of Us could serve as a good model for Ghost of Tsushima.

Ghost of Tsushima received critical acclaim for its story upon release, quickly becoming a favorite among gamers as a Game of the Year contender, thanks in part to its storytelling. Stahelski's decision to focus on recreating the core narrative and thematic elements may prove to be the best choice in making a film that appeals to both games and moviegoers. Plus, The Last Of Us by demonstrating to audiences the potential of video game adaptations, more viewers unfamiliar with the PlayStation title may be more interested in giving future adaptations a chance.
