If you're specifically looking for calcite, all you have to do is break through the darker outer shell of these geodes, basalt. You will need to delve into your Minecraft world to find them, which can take a long time. Amethyst geodes spawn between y=70 and bedrock, which means you need to dig deep and long before they spawn.
Right in the middle is a small layer of calcite holding all the amethyst. You can mine calcite first and then take any amethyst you want, or you can get shard blocks from fully grown clusters.
