Even though they were buggy when they launched Early Access, fish traps in the game Sons of the Forest now fixed. Finally, catching lunch just got a little easier. Finding a reliable food source is one of my first tasks in any survival game, and collecting a few fish traps is a fairly easy way to stock up. Personally, I still recommend asking Kelvin to fish for you. The same patch that fixed the traps made it so he can't fish indefinitely, but he's still surprisingly effective.
How to fish in the game Sons of the Forest
- Build a fish trap in the water with 25 sticks (caught every 5-10 minutes)
- Make a spear out of a stick and use it in the water.
- Ask Kelvin to fish for you (he's great at it)
When setting up a fish trap, I would recommend a place that is at least partially submerged. After a game update that fixed the fish traps, my trap set at the top of the spawning stream still didn't work, but the one further downstream and half submerged gave the expected result. Even without investing in fishing, you can scrape together a fair amount of fish in just a few minutes by working alongside your best friend Kelvin. If you want to fish on your own, use your inventory to connect two sticks, duct tape and a knife to make a spear. A knife is not needed, it is only needed for carving. Stick your new spear anywhere in the water where you can see swimming fish. My safe spot so far has been at the top of the stream that flows into the lake, where I could see the salmon jumping out of the water upstream. However, in my experience, it takes quite a few tries to catch a fish every time.
An even easier option is to ask Kelvin to do the fishing for you. From his command menu, tell Kelvin to "get a fish and" either "throw it here" or "give it to me" and he'll start hand-catching it from the nearest stream or pond. It's been a winning ticket to free dinners for me so far because Kelvin manages to catch five or six fish in just a few minutes. This allows me to easily toast them and hang them in the drying rack while he works his magic.
