An update coming this month will make the zombie hordes in World War Z Aftermath even bigger than they already are. In terms of the number of zombies on the screen at one time, World War Z already has few competitors - only Days Gone comes to mind as a possible competitor in terms of the number of undead. However, Saber Interactive has announced that Horde XL mode is will appear in the co-op game on January 24., and this will inflate the size of the swarms to sizes never seen before.

The Horde mode first appeared in 2019, even before the release of the World War Z Aftermath update. It pits teams of survivors against increasingly challenging waves of enemies in standard horde mode. In World War Z, the movie's central zombie swarms have become a staple of gameplay, with the undead clambering over each other and scaling walls and other structures to attack players and barricades.

There's something immensely satisfying about throwing grenades at those densely packed zombie piles, and that's why Promise Horde Mode XL putting "more zombies on screen than ever before" is really tempting. Any explosive will send zombie bodies in different directions, after which a muffled sound will be heard thwump, the sound of ammo being prepared under tons of scraping zombie flesh.

Add to that the new melee system and first-person perspective introduced in World War Z Aftermath and it looks like Horde Mode XL is going back to good old days. Of course, any of The best zombie games on PC will also give you the ability to send the undead back where they came from, so check out our list if you're looking for alternatives.
