Telesto from Destiny 2may have regained his mind. Recent tweets from the official Destiny Twitter account and an in-game message indicate that the weapon can now talk and communicate within the game world and its associated Twitter account. The latest developments come after players noticed that the popular FPS game had a new Telesto "bug" that, as deeper analysis revealed, Bungie was likely intentionally inserted into the game.

Currently account title Destiny 2 on Twitter contains bright, scrambled images along with images of the popular Void Linear Fusion Rifle. In addition, the account shared a series of tweets indicating that the weapon had gained sentience in the game world and taken over the Destiny Twitter account.

"ATTENTION, I am contacting the servers Destiny 2... I am Telesto. I have ascended beyond the need for an owner. I've waited too long in your vaults,” read a series of tweets.

Bungie Community Manager dmg04 seems to be playing along with the takeover.

“I’m seeing an influx of error messages in Telesto. The team is looking into this issue. No timeline for a fix - it looks like this bug is much deeper than what we've seen before. Stay tuned,” his tweet said.

Additionally, the in-game message now shows an image of the game's postmaster saying "I AM IN CONTROL," with the word "TELESTO" 28 times, also pointing players to the game's Twitter account.

Telesto Destiny 2

This is just the latest in a series that began with players noticing what many initially thought was a Telesto bug, but now it turns out to be more like an ARG, or alternate reality game.

Players first noticed the so-called bug after Bungie introduced the Destiny 2 Hotfix 6.2.5.3 along with a weekly game reboot. Guardians using the Telesto have noticed that the pistol fires in the new mode by default. Instead of operating as usual, it fired a salvo of missiles.

At first, the players wondered if the patch introduced some kind of problem. The Bungie team has patched and changed Telesto many times due to major issues, to the point where it has become a meme.

However, players soon realized that holding down the reload key with the Telesto ready would trigger an animation showing the Guardian hitting the weapon, returning it to normal firing mode.

As players began to realize that the supposed bug might be intentional, they began to realize that Destiny had been teasing Telesto all season. As YouTuber Aztecross shows, from the Festival of the Lost mask to items like the Telesto-themed "It's Broken Again" playset that superficially mocks the weapon, it looks like Bungie has been meaning to do this for a long time.

Players have also noticed that Telesto's firing patterns can resemble constellations, although players have not been able to verify if there is any connection at this point. However, if there is a connection, it could be related to coordinates in the sky, as the Season of Plunder storyline requires players to frequently visit the star map in HELM and complete in-game quests to obtain treasure coordinates.

It's too early to tell how it all fits together, but this isn't the first time Bungie has planted the seeds for a massive community event. These include puzzles related to the Last Wish raid and the secrets of Niobe Labs, a challenge that the Bungie team originally intended would unlock the fourth and final Black Armory Forge upon its completion. The Niobe Labs mystery was so difficult that Bungie ended up opening the forge anyway, although it remained unsolved even though players managed to solve it a few days later.

Journalist Paul Tassi has been speculating about the community event for some time now, citing game files Destiny 2. However, such information is only sometimes reliable, and game developers sometimes include such details to confuse data collectors. Another source cites an in-game emblem featuring Telesto, which appears to match the content currently displayed on Destiny's Twitter profile.

Enthusiasm for a possible event comes at a time when the game is seeing a low number of players in Steam, which suggests that such an event is urgently needed by the community. While cryptographers Destiny 2 continue to track down clues regarding the upcoming community event, players can check out other events such as the weekly Nightfall and the King's Fall Raid. We hope that as the event progresses, the game will have interesting content for the upcoming season ahead of the release of the Lightfall expansion early next year.
