Developers CD Projekt Red made a splash on October 4th when they announced that they are currently planning three new Witcher games and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, as well as playing on a new original IP. A member of the Cyberpunk 2077 development team says this Cyberpunk sequel is the reason we'll only see one expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 - a significant shift from CD Projekt Red's preliminary plans for an RPG.

Cyberpunk 2077 senior level designer Miles Toast retweeted CD Projekt's announcement of a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, codenamed Project Orion, says: "For those wondering why there is 'only' one #Cyberpunk2077 expansion - don't worry, we'll still have your backs buddies!"

It is understood that instead of further expansions, we will see a completely new Cyberpunk game. This is a pretty major departure from what CD Projekt originally described as their post-launch Cyberpunk 2077 roadmap plans.

A few months before the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020, CD Projekt president and co-CEO Adam Kiczynski told players to "expect more" from Cyberpunk 2077 DLC than the company has prepared for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which saw a total of two major expansions and 16 additional packages.

As we all know, plans had to change quite dramatically after the disaster that led to the heavily delayed launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in December of that year. Shortly after the September announcement of the 2023 Phantom Liberty expansion, CD Projekt revealed that it was the only expansion planned for Cyberpunk 2077.

This came as a surprise to many players, despite Cyberpunk 2077's difficult launch and tumultuous first year. Now, however, it looks like the studio may have abandoned plans to further expand on the troubled 2077 in favor of an entirely new title.

The game, codenamed Orion, will be developed by new North American studio CD Projekt in Boston, the company said.

We'll likely have to wait a few years before we have any concrete details about the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. In the meantime, check out the best Cyberpunk 2077 mods we've found on our Night City travels.
