The League of Legends Worlds 2022 event and its associated pass have drawn criticism from the MOBA community for being too "grainy" and lacking meaningful rewards for their price, prompting a response from developer Riot Games.

Coming out on October 6th and coinciding with the biggest event of the year in LoL, the Worlds event and its associated battle pass have been out for a few days now, but they haven't been the hit the developers were probably hoping for.

There are two different passes (Worlds pass and Worlds pass bundle), both of which give you access to the premium battle pass track and, in the case of the latter, some new Spirit Blossom skins. It will take 400 XP to unlock each milestone, but the players found this to be too much.

By posting ads on League of Legends Reddit, one player asks “Can anyone do the math and see if Worlds is worth it or is it just prettier? Right now we feel like this is the same level of grind as the previous Steel Valkyries pass (which was a lot), just with two better rewards (bags).”

“This seems much more boring,” one player replies. “They removed the weekly mission, and the missions listed on the event support page say we'll get 5850 XP, which is about 14 levels. You have 50 levels to bags, the amount of play seems absurd.”

In addition, the apparent remuneration to cash ratio also rose by storm. “To get one prestige skin, you need to pay $15 for the PLUS pass and grind two hours a day for 30 days,” comments one player, equating the cost of the pass to $615 based on the time spent grinding it.

This prompted a response from League of Legends event team senior designer Daniel 'Rovient' Leaver, who wrote: "On average, 2000 games of SR per day are enough to get 2,1 tokens, but this Worlds event is actually longer, so you can play fewer games per day and collect 2000 tokens.”

When one of the players points out that you “don’t unlock everything,” Rovient responds, “That’s right, it’s a store. You buy the chromes or items you want. What you can't choose can be obtained in rewards. There’s a lot of value there too,” and continues: “There are 160-plus champions, and most people play four or five at most. We allow players to choose what they want using the tokens they earn. This is not a scam, this is a store. You actually get all the stuff in the reward track that's worth a lot more than 1650 RP."

While the Worlds pass works much like its predecessors in practice, it's clear that the community isn't thrilled with the 2022 iteration. Whether or not Riot will adjust XP and rewards is not yet clear, so for now we just have to grind.
