The NPD Group released the August 2022 report on video game hardware, software and accessories sales in the United States.
According to the NPD, total video game industry spending was down 5% year-over-year (YoY) to $4,10 billion. For the year, spending was $34,6 billion, down 9% from a year earlier.
For the month of August equipment sales were up 14% year-over-year to $375 million, driven by improved shipments of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. Over the year, hardware spending fell 4% to $2,9 billion.
The PS5 became the best-selling console of August in both units and dollars. For the year, the Switch sold the most units, while the PlayStation 5 led the market in terms of dollar sales. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series posted double-digit percentage growth year-over-year, as did both consoles last month.

Saints Row (2022) debuted at number two, while Marvel's Spider-Man climbed to number three on the August best-selling games chart. It also became the bestseller of the month among monitored games in Steam.
Elden Ring dropped to number four but remains the best-selling game of the year so far. Fifth place was taken by the game MultiVersus, which became number one last month.
