The new Overwatch 2 update fixes several major issues in the Blizzard FPS game, including a chat bug that appeared to be causing random in-game store purchases. The update also includes the previously announced removal of Overwatch 2 phone verification as a requirement for players who previously played the original multiplayer game and helps address account merger issues.

The chat bug in question, detailed by the user at Reddit page seemed to cause text typed into the in-game chat window to also be interpreted as input for menu navigation. This meant that if someone was looking at an item that could be unlocked, simply double-pressing the spacebar in chat - easy to do quickly when chatting with other players - would result in the purchase of the item.

Drashioshe, who reported the original bug, says that the updates deployed during the maintenance period, which lasted approximately one hour from 19:00 PM PT / 22:00 PM ET on Oct. 7 (3:00 AM PT / 4:00 AM CET October 8th) seems to have fixed the issue with the chat. They say they have "still not received a refund and I doubt they ever will" for a purchase they made, while Blizzard's response confirms that "we cannot offer refunds or any compensation for unlocks made with in-game currency in the Observer".

In addition, Blizzard states that updating its database after the extended Overwatch 2 server downtime "resulted in a fourfold increase in our capacity and a possible overnight reduction in login queues." It notes that "early signs are good" but that "hours of play over the weekend will be his biggest test."

In addition, Blizzard notes that this higher number of concurrent players means that "matchmaking systems are affected", resulting in longer wait times between games. It says it's making changes to matchmaking configurations that it hopes will reduce waiting times but will continue to monitor this over the weekend.

Meanwhile, many players are still reporting that many of their Overwatch 2 hero roster is locked as they are mistakenly placed in Blizzard's recently implemented "first player experience" system. Some players who didn't have locked heroes say that this happened to them now between updates - I personally experienced this problem in one version of the game too, but not when logging into another version on the same account.

This particular issue is not addressed directly in latest status update. However, Blizzard notes that many players are still in the process of merging accounts and are still missing items from their collection that they previously owned in the first game, but the updated database leaves "more bandwidth to complete these mergers." Let's hope that the problem will be solved as soon as possible, because the players reports that they ended up in competitive play with only three characters available, certainly not the ideal kind, transitioning into the aforementioned "weekend game hours".
