Meta Quest 2 (formerly Oculus Quest 2) has long been the most popular VR headset choice in Steam. Making up just under 50% of users SteamVR last month, Meta standalone headset dropped significantly in September. However, a recent review of Valve's hardware means things aren't quite as clear-cut.
All September Oculus Quest 2 number of users Steam decreased by 7,86%, representing 41,39% of the user base SteamVR. Despite this decline, it is still well ahead of the Valve index, which maintains second place with a 1,77% gain enjoyed by 17,21% of gamers.
Both the Oculus Rift S and the original Rift saw increases of 2,88% and 2,42%, respectively. This is an unusually high jump for two discontinued headsets, and could be the result of potential bugs in Valve's tracking. Otherwise, the HTC Vive posted a marginal gain in fourth place with 7,07%.
It's worth noting that these are not the numbers we originally saw in the hardware review. Steam in August 2022. Valve first recorded 8,28% drop among Quest 2 users, but updated this statistic after it was originally published with a 0,29% increase. This meant that Quest 2 users accounted for 49,25% of the total players. SteamVR. As such, the Quest 2 remained dominant as it continued to compete for the title of best VR headset.
In a statement to DownloadVR Valve explains the reasons for updating statistics:
“The equipment survey shows natural fluctuations in response rates from month to month, so some variability in the statistics is to be expected. However, the jumps in May/July and the additional category in August forced us to take a deeper look, and we've now fixed a few issues with data collection and analysis, as well as fixing the August survey results page. We expect to get more accurate results in the future."
Improved headset stats SteamVR.
We also have a much more detailed breakdown of VR headsets in Valve's latest survey, with previous reports categorizing 15,07% of VR headsets under the "Other" collective entry. The same category now only accounts for 1,35% of devices in use, and the numbers for devices like the HTC Vive Pro and Pico Neo 3 are now clearer.
Regardless, this drop in user numbers may cause concern for Meta after the Quest 2 price increase, especially given the fierce competition from Pico 4. But since the launch of Project Cambria (Meta Quest Pro) is imminent, and Oculus Quest 3 is under development, virtual reality enthusiasts can hold on for a real next-generation experience.
