The Modern Warfare 2 campaign is out for those of us who pre-ordered the new Call of Duty game, and many are calling it Infinity Ward's finest work. Whether you've played an FPS or not, you already know that classic characters like Soap, Captain Price, and Ghost are back for Modern Warfare 2's campaign reboot, and Infinity Ward has already talked about how they'd like to make a spin-off based on this universe.

To be clear, we won't spoil the Modern Warfare 2 campaign below, and Infinity Ward's comments don't spoil the narrative either, so you can read on if you haven't played the game yet.

This could also be related to rumors of DLC for Modern Warfare 2 scheduled for 2023, but revealing it through hopes and dreams even before the base game is out, with no confirmation of DLC for Modern Warfare 2's campaign yet, would be a strange move.

Essentially, some developers at Infinity Ward want to make a prequel to Simon "Ghost" Riley, according to narrative director Jeffrey Neguse and head writer Brian Bloom. IGN in a recent interview.

“Yes, I'm going to say it. The origin story of the Phantom,” says Bloom, adding that he and Negus want to make a game/campaign featuring the Phantom. “There are others interested, and we think it would be very interesting. And again, that's where the interview started, that there's something iconic about this character, but the mask and some of these more superficial elements, as we've tried to create them here in our current issue, where do some of these things come from? I think audiences will love it and we're excited to do it."

It looks like they want to go the Solo: A Star Wars Story route and explain all the iconic details of the Ghost's character, such as his interesting attachment to skull accessories. Whether most players will respond well to this remains to be seen, as I guess it depends on how Infinity Ward handles a potential Modern Warfare 2 campaign spin-off.

Negus adds that story ideas for Ghost come up all the time among the team, and that "it's hard for us not to be like, 'Dude, wouldn't that be cool?'"
