Destiny 2 The Iron Banner is back, but this time the fan-favorite has an extra layer of PvE gameplay. Fortress, a new Cabal-themed mode, is similar to Control, a standard zone capture mode similar to modes popular in many online shooters. However, in the new mode of the 19th season Destiny 2 Iron Banner players must not only fight each other in FPS, but also destroy turrets to capture "high value zones" that give more points than other capture zones.

Destiny 2 Iron Banner is a Crucible event that occurs twice per season and features special game modes, gear and rewards only available in the event. In Crucible's Control mode, players earn points by capturing zones. Guardians receive two points for each zone they control in each time slot. When a team controls two zones, the game considers their zone advantage and awards four points in each time slot. When a team captures all three zones, it is a power play and the team scores six points for each time period.

In Fortress mode, the rules are similar to Control, except that twice during the match a Cabal pod lands on one of the capture points. Players must fight each other and Cabal turrets to capture the zone. The team that manages to capture the Cabal zone receives more points in a shorter period of time.

This new mode is also connected to the game's story. In the past, the Empress of the Society, Caiatl, who is now allied with the Vanguard, has expressed her interest in the Crucible. When fans heard about it, some wished she was involved in the Iron Bannerperhaps even voicing this activity. It appears that the inclusion of Cabal turrets in Iron Banner was a way to bolster her reputation as a warlord by allowing her to engage in PvP combat on behalf of the Vanguard.
