Web54 exclusively premieres the trailer for Once Upon a Time in Ukraine, aka Inglourious Serfs, an upcoming action-comedy inspired by the work of Quentin Tarantino. Mixing alternate history, ultra-violence and good humor, Once Upon a Time in Ukraine will finally cross the ocean, becoming a cult classic in Europe.

The trailer reveals the whimsical concept of Once Upon a Time in Ukraine, which depicts what would happen if famous poet Taras Shevchenko (played by Roman Lutsky) met a samurai in the 19th century. The story follows a young samurai, Akayo (Sergei Strelnikov), who travels to Ukraine to exact revenge after an enslaver mistakenly appropriates his master's swords. Therefore, he decides to join forces with Taras, who wants to free his beloved from the clutches of the same evil man.

While the film's original title pays homage to Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and the US title nods to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the trailer highlights how writer-director Roman Perfilyev took inspiration from the fan-favorite Hollywood director's other films. Using sword fighting as a storytelling tool, Perfilyev was clearly inspired by Kill Bill. At the same time, the western about the friendly journey of Taras and Akayo is reminiscent of Django Unchained. The trailer for Once Upon a Time in Ukraine doesn't just echo Tarantino's style, but the film promises to be an original story filled with good laughs and stylish violence.

Just from the trailer alone, Once Upon a Time in Ukraine looks amazing. Plus, it's nice to have access to a Ukrainian production that celebrates art as a means to make us laugh, especially after the country suffered so much over a year ago. Perfilyev's film is also an excellent opportunity to learn more about Ukrainian cinema, not only because it is inspired by Tarantino's Hollywood style, but also because Once Upon a Time in Ukraine was very well received in Europe.
