The Super Mario Bros movie is almost ready to exit the warp tube to theaters, but fans should be aware that the movie's release date was changed at the last minute. Unlike many films that have been pushed back over the past few years, usually due to the pandemic, Super Mario Bros. comes out earlier than expected.

Super Mario Bros movie hits theaters April 5th

In the trailers for the movie Super Mario Bros. and special Nintendo Directs, the release date has already been discussed, as it was originally set for April 7th. A post on the film's official Twitter page confirmed that the date has changed, with Super Mario Bros now releasing on April 5 in North America and most territories around the world. The exception is Japan, where the film is released on April 28.

The change means Super Mario Bros. will be released on a Wednesday instead of Friday, so it won't follow the usual opening weekend ticket sales format used by most blockbuster films. This is an odd decision since opening weekend sales are usually used as an indicator of how well a film will perform in subsequent weeks, and the Super Mario Bros movie opens midweek when people have school or work the next day.

Universal Pictures has not explained why this change was made. It is not clear what caused this, because on the weekend of April 7 there is not a single blockbuster released that would compete with the film “Super Mario Bros.” It's possible that the initial positive reaction to the film's trailer led the studio to want to release the film a little early to create a big rush on its opening weekend since many Mario fans would still be showing up on Wednesday or Thursday.
