Looking for information about the new Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movie? Following today's news that Amazon has ordered a TV adaptation of the hit Tomb Raider video game series from acclaimed writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, The Hollywood Reporter has expanded on the story, reporting that the "massive rights deal" will also include at least one video game and a new Tomb Raider feature film.

The report states that the plan is to create and expand the interconnected world of the Lara Croft Tomb Raider franchise: a television series, a feature film and a video game - or games, depending on success - will all be interconnected in a manner not dissimilar from , which Marvel uses in its Marvel Cinematic Universe, where stories are intertwined across a variety of formats, including film, television, games, and written media.

The latest Lara Croft: Tomb Raider video game was already announced last year, and given the franchise's previous success, further installments in the series are considered likely. The report further adds that one source with knowledge of the deal said it is one of the largest franchise commitments Amazon has made since acquiring the rights to the Lord of the Rings franchise, which is believed to have cost more than $250 million . The deal covered a multi-season series - currently airing as Rings of Power - and a spin-off of that series is also in development.

Waller-Bridge will write the screenplay for the television adaptation. The move comes as the talented performer is a big fan of the Tomb Raider series and would love to be involved in making it for television. Her involvement is believed to be related to a shared deal she recently renewed with Amazon.

The film adaptation marks the third attempt to bring the series from consoles to the screen, following a pair of critically unsuccessful films in the early 2000s starring Angelina Jolie in an overtly glamorous take on the character based on the curvier appearance of Lara Croft in the early PlayStation video games. The 2018 reboot, which starred Alicia Vikander, was based on a similar reboot of the video game series.

This film was a darker, more realistic version of the character based on the game that was more comparable to critically acclaimed games such as Naughty Dog's Uncharted series. However, the film with Vikander failed to recoup its $106 million budget before marketing costs. A sequel was originally in development, with Vikander to reprise her role, due to the film's more positive critical reception. However, the sequel was dropped in 2022 after MGM's film rights to the series expired.
