A massive mod for Darkest Dungeon: Black Reliquary will be released this month on March 24, 2023. The mod is a complete rework with the approval of the developers of the original Darkest Dungeon from Red Hook, and the list of changes ... really big. First of all, this is a gameplay overhaul and a completely new campaign with a new setting, new characters, new storytelling, new music, new enemies and facts, trinkets and new player characters.

The story will follow a group of heroes as they travel to the Black Reliquary, a monolithic structure in the desert known only as the Vale. Here's how the developers describe it: “Give up what you think you know. The Valley knows no mercy or compassion, and the trials you will face will be unlike anything you have faced before! Find yourself in a new home aboard the airship Flameseeker and reunite with old acquaintances from years past, joining forces to storm the oppressive and mysterious Black Reliquary."

Darkest Dungeon mod

Is there as a plot release date trailerAnd extended gameplay trailer Black Reliquary, both highlight the incredible amount of new art and design that has gone into the game's free expansion. Which, to be honest, is not even quite what it is. It's like a free-to-play sequel that fell through a crack in reality from another dimension.

This is a lot, and work on it has been going on for years. This is one of those rare mods that is so elaborate and extensive that it has its own page in Steam, and not in the Workshop, which is rarely honored, except for mods for games a decade or more old, such as Half-Life 2.

Say hello to the guy playing the new narrator, who - at least in these trailers - does a very good job of capturing the gravitational storytelling that is taken for granted in the Darkest Dungeon environment.

This and all the art is what makes me say this feels like a sequel. Not a sequel in the 2020s sense, where five or six years have passed since the first game was released, but a sequel in the 1990s sense, where the sequel reused the engine and some art, redesigned the systems, and then confidently released it into the world in a maximum of a year.

Black Reliquary will be available completely free of charge via Steam for those with Darkest Dungeon, Shieldbreaker DLC and Crimson Court DLC. you can find Black Reliquary's Steam. The Black Reliquary team is funding the mod through Patreon, and you can follow the development of the mod in Twitter.
